When Simple Worksheets Work Better Than Complex Ones

I love cute clipart! I’ll admit it. But I will also admit that there are times when a simple worksheet layout is a better choice. Sometimes kids need something minimal and easy to understand to get the concept across. Here are some reasons for choosing simple worksheets for kids.

Less Reading

Kids today (and frankly adults today!) tend to read less thoroughly. They may skip the directions and dive right into the first task. Keeping worksheets simple means less reading is needed to understand the assignment.

Better Use of Time

Have you ever had a student turn in a worksheet that was thoroughly colored in but not actually complete? Sometimes the clipart on the worksheet is just too tempting for kids and they spend their time coloring rather than completing the problems. Keeping the worksheet clean and plain can help students use their time well.

Less Distractions

When there are too many elements on the page, it is easy to get distracted from the main tasks. It can be difficult to see at first glance what pictures are related to the skill being practiced and what pictures are decorative. If the page is cluttered with too many images, it can be more difficult for a student to get started. They may avoid getting started because the task of understanding the worksheet is too difficult.

More Accessible

Students with learning disabilities are often more successful when the learning task is focused on the most important objectives. Less reading can be helpful for students with dyslexia. Less distractions can be helpful for those with attention difficulties. Students with visual discrimination issues have an easier time when the page is laid out in a clear and uncluttered way.

Fit to the Purpose

All worksheets do not need to be simple. However, when choosing curricula or practice pages for your students, think about the concept that you are teaching them. Some complex tasks are more understandable in a simple format. Other times, it may be better to have clipart or other embellishments to make the page look more fun and inviting. Consider your students and the topic, then choose the style that is right for you.
