Five Ways to Make Your Classroom Cozy for the Winter

It is getting chilly outside! This is a perfect time to make your classroom cozy - for your students and for yourself. Creating a warm and comfortable atmosphere helps everyone settle into some good reading, writing, and generally enjoying their time at school. Here are a few tips for creating that cozy atmosphere in your classroom.

Lighting

String fairy lights to create a cozy vibe. You may need to check with your school or district, as some may have rules against hanging lights due to fire regulations. Focus on LED lights as they don’t get hot like incandescent bulbs. You can find LED lights with a “warm” tone to add to the atmosphere.

I would avoid candles with open flames, but there are many faux LED candles that look very similar to the real thing. There are also little LED tea lights if you are comfortable placing them onto student desks. There are also faux lanterns that can be placed around the classroom for a comfy feel.

Music

Put on some classical or folk music at a low volume in the background as students work. This can be a great addition to individual seatwork such as journal writing time.

If you play an instrument, winter is a great time to play for your students and invite them to sing along!

Natural Materials

As much as possible, use natural materials in your classroom for a cozy feel. For example, place winter books in a wicker basket rather than a plastic bin. Bring in materials from outside such as pinecones to decorate your classroom.

Soft Fabrics

Spread large pillows and blankets on the floor to create a cozy reading nook. You can even have a pajama day where students wear their pjs and bring a favorite stuffed animal to read to.

Yummy Treats

If you are able to share treats with your class, you may give them a chance to try warm apple cider or hot chocolate. Cookies are a great addition to treat time! Be aware of any food allergies or restrictions of your students before serving them any food. If students are not allowed to eat outside food, you can have them write about their favorite treats and share with the class.

Conclusion

Whether you incorporate all of these ideas or just a few, you and your students are sure to benefit from a cozy feeling in your classroom this winter. Enjoy this special time!
